Bismark Hat
I had nearly an entire skein of hand spun naturally dyed yarn leftover when I finished my Polina sweater last week so I cast on a hat with it. The pattern is Bismark by Kate Gagnon Osborn for Kelbourne Woolens. If you’re on Ravelry you can find it here but I can’t seem to find a link for it outside of Ravelry. I posted this to my project notebook there if you’re interested in checking it out. One of the many things I adore about Ravelry is that they save all your previously purchased patterns in a convenient library for you. I first knit up this pattern for my son way back in 2013. It looks like I skipped the double fold provisional cast on band back then but this time around I didn’t and I love the durability of it.
The color work makes for a nice thick hat despite it being knit in a fingering weight yarn. The green color is my homegrown rudbeckia on gray sheep’s wool, the white is undyed sheep’s wool, and the pompom is dyed with madder root. I’m really picky about hats but I love this one. It’s a bit slouchy but not too much and I really lucked out with the band being the absolute perfect size. I didn’t bother to knit a test gauge so I got really lucky there!
It has a vintage 1950’s feeling that I’m loving! I might just have to knit another.
