SECOND GLEAN
SECOND GLEAN
These traditional 9-Patch blocks were made from tiny scraps leftover from all the quilts I’ve made over the past several years. This quilt is the second scrap quilt I have to offer— hence Second Glean. There are over 35 plant dyed colors in this piece! Normally I wouldn’t put so many colors together in one piece but that’s the beauty of using what you have. Scrap quilts are good like that because you’re forced to use what you have and make it work in a way that you wouldn’t normally think to.
All of the plant derived colors were dyed on organic cotton and organic linen fabrics and the off white background is organic cotton. The batting layer is also organic cotton. The dark blue quilt-back (a cotton/linen blend) was achieved by several dips in my indigo vat and the calico prints are both vintage cottons—most likely from the 60’s. The quilting was done entirely by hand with Japanese sashiko thread and the binding was also hand-stitched.
